Learning Differences

INTASC #2: Learning Differences

This standard highlights the importance of recognizing and responding to the diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning preferences students bring to the classroom. Effective teachers adapt instruction to ensure all students can access the curriculum and feel valued in the learning community.

In my teaching, I focus on creating an inclusive classroom that supports learners through flexible strategies and personalized instruction. By differentiating activities and integrating student interests, I strive to meet the needs of each individual student.

Artifacts:

  • Differentiated Sight Word Choice Board
I created a choice board for practicing sight words that allowed students to choose how they wanted to engage with the material. Options included building words with magnetic letters, using them in a sentence, rainbow writing, and drawing pictures. This artifact shows how I accommodate different learning styles and allow students to take ownership of their learning.

  • Small Group Guided Reading Plan Based on Reading Scores
I used reading scores to group students by reading level and plan targeted lessons for each group. These small-group sessions focused on skills such as decoding, comprehension, or fluency, depending on the group’s needs. This artifact demonstrates how I use assessment data to adapt instruction based on student learning differences.

  • “Who Am I” Show and Tell Identity Activity
This activity invited students to bring in personal items that represent who they are. They wrote brief descriptions and shared with the class. This allowed students to reflect on their identities and helped build an inclusive classroom community that values individual experiences.
